A Scoping Review of the Future of Work: Effects of Artificial Intelligence Automation and Remote Work on Employment Patterns, Skill Demands, and Organizational Dynamics

Abstract
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and remote work has significantly influenced employment patterns, skill requirements, and organizational structures within the evolving digital economy. This scoping review explores the relationship between AI-driven automation and telecommuting, emphasizing their combined effects on occupational sectors and workforce capabilities. AI technologies have expedited task automation, with an estimated 47% of jobs in the United States potentially affected, while also creating opportunities in high-skill areas such as data analysis and AI development. Additionally, remote work accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic—has contributed to a 15% increase in gig economy participation and up to 13% improvements in productivity within knowledge-based industries. However, these developments also pose challenges related to job security and digital inclusivity. The changing employment landscape underscores the need for technical skills like programming, as well as soft skills such as adaptability, with projections indicating that approximately 60% of workers will require reskilling by 2027. While AI can enhance organizational efficiency, it also necessitates cultural adjustments to address potential displacement concerns. Remote work requires decentralized organizational structures and effective communication frameworks. Key challenges include skill obsolescence, digital disparities, and ethical considerations associated with AI-driven behavioral modeling. This review advocates for adaptive workforce strategies, including AI-supported training programs and inclusive digital platforms, alongside policy initiatives focused on reskilling and ethical AI practices, to promote a resilient, equitable, and sustainable employment environment.
